26-year-old model Sasha Pivovarova is almost as well known for her artistic streak as she is for her modelling career. Whether it’s sketching backstage in-between shows or showing her work in New York and Paris, the Russian beauty is no stranger to blending fashion with art. Now, the artiste’s talents have scored her a collaboration with GapBody, the lingerie line at the Gap, which is set to launch this December.
Pivovarova has always had a fondness for illustration and design, but it took a backseat in 2005 when she was plucked out of university as an art history major and started out with an exclusive contract with Prada. Even now, her career shows no signs of slowing. The former FLARE cover girl has landed top campaigns for Giorgio Armani, Hugo by Hugo Boss and has a role in the newly released film, In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried.
Though busy, Pivovarova has not forgotten her first love: art. Currently, she is working on the illustrations for a book of Russian fairy tales in collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld. She says that her designs for GapBody are also inspired by these fantastical stories. The pieces are splashed with her playful artwork – a delicate pen and ink flower design on an ivory satin backdrop – and have a light wash of periwinkle, sage and lilac along with more saturated spots that look like drops of paint. The “creative process gives me the most freedom,” she says, “because I can do anything I want on a piece of blank media.”
The pretty, lady-like collection will include such pieces as a bra and underwear set, a boyshort and chemise pairing, and a nightdress. The Sasha Pivovarova for GapBody collection lands in stores on December 1 in select retail locations across Canada, the US and Europe but you can shop the line now on the brand’s American website.
