The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge might have bypassed Toronto on their royal tour this summer, but last night the city’s haute monde were given the royal wave. Indeed, Monaco’s newlyweds Prince Albert II and his athletic wife Princess Charlène (looking très moderne in an abbreviated petit robe noir by Dior) came to town to fête Grace Kelly: From Movie Star to Princess. An impressive exhibit housed at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, this ode to bygone glamour features many of the silver screen star’s most memorable fashion moments. From her wedding dress that sparked countless imitations (and incurable Prince Charming fantasies) to Yves Saint Laurent and Mark Bohan for Dior originals, consider the show a masterclass in Kelly’s exquisite style. Cinemaphiles will also relish in film stills, posters and memorabilia from all eleven of her films. Yes, only eleven. While our dear Grace retired from showbiz at age 26, her indelible influence, and “unyielding quest for perfection,” as her son Prince Albert noted in his address, continue to inspire.
