Beautiful young things in a field of Queen Anne’s lace, mums, and delphinium flowers made for a pretty scene at the Calvin Klein Spring 2016 presentation in New York last week. From bra tops paired with oversized denim jackets to floral tunics worn over flowing trousers, the looks were clean, effortless and youthful. We caught up with Global Creative Director Kevin Carrigan after the show to find out more about the Minimalism Undone trend, why the ’90s are back in a big way, and how to wear next season’s it-piece, the slip dress.

You described the collection as ‘”minimalism undone.” Why?
Minimalism undone or even disruptive minimalism. Those are the words I was looking at. Everyone knows Calvin as pure, minimal and pared-down. We can do that very easily but we can also have fun too! We can mash things up, put things together in an unusual way.

How would you describe the collection in one word?
I would say ‘Festival.’ It was definitely free-spirited. You go to a festival to be free and to have fun. I wanted that spirit in the clothes. I didn’t want it to be uptight. Everything was undone.

The ’90s are back. What’ new this time around?
Yes, the ’90s are back! The slip dressing, the softness. Grunge is coming back, and a wave of dressing undone. But what I particularly like is the new face of beauty at that period (models like Nadja Auermann and Kate Moss); there’s something that was honest, authentic, and sweet about it. This season, it was nice to do something completely chilled out and relaxed.

What’s the must-have item for spring?
Softness. Anything that’s in soft fabrics: a slip dress, a blouse, a camisole. Unisex, optical white for both men and women. What I call the ‘skater flare’ jean…a bootleg jean that falls over a sneaker.

Slip dresses are huge next year. What would you style them with?
I think you should wear it for day. Dress it down with a tank underneath. Don’t think of slip dressing as being only for evening wear. It’s a trend that you can wear in high summer and feel comfortable, and it can definitely take you from office to evening.
