Broken heels, last minute stitching, steam and spray filling the air, these are the elements found backstage at any high power fashion show. Amongst the chaos lies Australian fashion photographer Sonny Vandevelde capturing top models before and after they walk the runway. “Give me a smile, yell, scream!” Vandevelde would holler just to crack the model shell as they finish up their duties on the catwalk. As they jumped, cheered and threw off their shoes, Sonny was there snapping every splashy move.
Formerly a sports photographer and now capturing models for fashion editorials and his blog, Sonny Photos, Vandevelde loves to tap into the energy backstage and kindly shares it with viewers around the world. The Aussie snapper brings a refreshing aura to the sometimes tense fashion world and gives scrollers a glimpse behind-the-scenes at top shows like Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Tommy Hilfiger and Proenza Schouler.
Ultimately, Vandevelde would like to see these major labels head to Australia and be inspired by one of the world’s most beautiful, untouched, landscapes. From outdoor sets to designers and models, Australia is coming off of one of their best seasons at this years Fashion Week. And with the popularity of his blog, the buzz down under is sure to catch on.
