For years, Vogue editor Anna Wintour has sat back while her contemporaries launched television series, but now the fashion queen is claiming her rightful crown – reality TV lovers, get ready for The Fashion Fund. The six-part docu-series follows the tenth instalment of Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s joint “Fashion Fund” program, where up-and-coming designers compete for a $300,000 USD grant and a one-year mentorship prize.
The biggest names in fashion make up the selection committee, including Wintour, CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg, Jenna Lyons of J.Crew, Neiman Marcus’ Reed Krakoff and Ken Downing.
The Fashion Fund is a realistic look at life as an aspiring designer. It takes audiences beyond the catwalk, to showroom floors and studio visits, a Vogue fashion photo shoot and a presentation at New York Fashion Week. The series culminates with the announcement of the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner. If you’re wondering, yes, The Fashion Fund is a completely different approach to reality-designing than Project Runway.
Previous winners of this prize include iconic names like Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and Joseph Altuzarra. Even the runner-ups, such as Thakoon and Rodarte, have earned media and investor attention. The Fashion Fund airs in Canada on Sundays and Thursdays at 8pm on GameTV.
