Legally Blonde turns 15 today and although we retired our Tiffany charm bracelet years ago, there’s actually lots of fashion in the flick we’d still wear (not to mention style and beauty wisdom—we may not be as high-maintenance as our beloved Elle Woods but girlfriend understood the importance of self-care). Behold, the surprisingly now styles that Elle Woods wore back in 2001.
Elle’s attempt at a Serious Harvard Law Student outfit for her first day of class is one of her most iconic and we still heart it today. You can’t go wrong with timeless menswear inspo.
Okay, we’d like to burn the tilted newsboy cap and throw the low-slung chain belt into the sea (you can’t spot it in this pic, but trust us, it’s there) but Elle was rocking the shoulder-baring style of 2016 back in 2001.
The Gucci effect
With oversized granny glasses, knee socks, chunky platform Mary Janes and a pussy-bow blouse underneath it, Elle’s iconic pink frock would fit right in with the Gucci FW16 looks.
We would have begged, borrowed or stolen for this pink velvet choker the first time we watched Legally Blonde and we still covet it today thanks to the resurgence of the signature ‘90s neckwear.
Elle first showed audiences the bend and snap in v. cute cropped jeans that look a lot like this spring’s popular denim trend. Also, not mad at the t-bar heels!
Please do your best to ignore the rose-coloured sunglasses (shudder), pink lucite wedges (barf) and inexplicable bikini top (WTF) and acknowledge that the faux fur chubby is all kinds of cute and would be right at home with all the coloured fur toppers that graced the FW16 runways.
Some of our favourite looks on Elle incorporated retro silhouettes like this Mad Men-ready outfit complete with fluted hem, peekaboo slip and sheer stockings. TBH, we wouldn’t change a thing.
Okay, if the placement of that bobby pin doesn’t send all of us actual ’90s babies into a time warp, we don’t know what will. With a subtle pouf sleeve, crisp collar and poppy red lip, this look is office aprops in any decade.
