On your marks, Toronto Wangsters, Jonathan + Olivia is about to get a mega dose of your fave New York designer and believe us, you don’t want to miss it. This Thursday, April 9, the Ossington boutique will be transformed into the closest thing the city has to a Alexander Wang flagship. That’s right: we’re talking full-on takeover. There is, of course, a catch: it’s one day only. Pre-gaming for the big day? FLARE recently spoke to the man himself about the what to expect, what to buy and if there’s a Canadian store in the works.
What can customers expect when they walk into Jonathan + Olivia on Thursday? We’re going to be taking over the entire store for one day with the spring collection, plus give customers a chance to preview the pre-fall and fall collections. The concept is based on the SS15 collection, which took sneaker culture as its starting point. I personally wear sneakers pretty much every day and I love the idea of emulating different urban tribes that cultishly wear a particular style of sneaker. People get obsessed with sneakers, and sneakers are both accessible and a collector’s items. We wanted to put J+O’s customers in an environment that combines our SS15 show set and the most current “Cage” installation at our New York flagship store. The focal point of the space will be an installation of black sneaker-boxes with a white Alexander Wang barcode logo. There will be a lot of sporting props, and we will use the same speckled rubber material that was also used for the runway design.
Why did you want to bring your takeover concept to Toronto? Any plans for a Toronto store? Jackie O’Brien-Jones and Nic Jones from Jonathan + Olivia have been amazing partners over the years. They have a unique selection and a great eye for interesting brands, so I’m happy to do something at their store. No current plans to open a flagship store [in Toronto], but I always like to go back to visit!
What part of the takeover are you most excited about? Another key element of the collection, and of this installation, are our sneaker bags. They’re based on sneaker soles, with custom paneling, lace stitching, basketball mesh and a sneaker “air bubble.” They come as a clutch, bag and backpack!
