danielle-knudson-guess-denim-spring-2014-campaign_7Here at FLARE we love to celebrate successful Canadian women—be sure to check out our recent profiles on Kirstine Stewart and Robyn Doolittle. When we learned that Red Deer native Danielle Knudson was booked as the newest face of GUESS, for Spring 2014, we set up a phone call to catch up with the Albertan tomboy (self-proclaimed!).  Read on to find out how her career started and what advice she had for aspiring models.

Was modelling always your career of choice?
I never really thought about it! I was scouted while attending a silent auction with my mother at eight-years-old. A man came up to me and asked where my mom was, then said I should think about modelling while offering his card to her. It wasn’t until I was 15 that I started taking it seriously—I was the biggest tomboy and really into sports—kind of funny considering what I do now.

Living internationally is almost like a rite of passage in the modelling world. Have you worked abroad?
I have worked abroad, mainly in Tokyo, Canada and the United States. My favourite place was Tokyo, its close proximity to so many islands makes it a great home-base for travelling around. Plus, the culture and fashion there is so rich.

This is your first major campaign, describe what it was like shooting for GUESS.
It was a dream come true. I was so happy and excited that day I can’t even describe it in words. We shot on location in Laguna Beach for three days. It was such an experience—I’ve always loved the brand, I remember staring at their ads in malls and on billboards—I have always dreamed of being a GUESS girl.

Clearly you’re not in Red Deer anymore…
I live in New York now! I do work frequently in Toronto, and try to make it back to Red Deer whenever I can.

Any advice for aspiring models?
Be confident and take it for what it is. Don’t listen to what you hear and just be yourself.

Spill: Agency of choice.
Wilhemina is the best agency I’ve been with. They believed in me from the moment I started working with them.

Tell us about your must-haves when headed into a casting. Do you have any beauty rituals beforehand?
I always have my YSL mascara. I use a little bit of bronzer, a touch of highlighter—and in I go. (With heels, of course!)
