It was no secret that Marilyn Monroe was a fan of Chanel No. 5. Sixty years ago before Brad Pitt whispered sweet nothings for the perfume, she was famously quoted saying she wore “just a few drops” of the scent to bed–and nothing else.
As part of their Inside Chanel project, the Paris fashion house recently released a short video with rare footage and photos of the actress, including audio recording they acquired last month in which she comments on her famous quote.
The clip in question is from an interview Monroe did with French Marie Claire journalist Georges Belmont while on the set of the 1960’s film Let’s Make Love. The quote was never published—until now.
“You know they ask you questions like, just an example, ‘What do you wear to bed? A pajama top? The bottoms of the pajamas? A nightgown?’ So I said, “Chanel No. 5! Because it’s the truth!” said Monroe in the interview. “Yet I don’t want to say ‘nude,’ you know? But it’s the truth.”
The video, titled “Marilyn and No.5,” is the second installment of the fashion house’s ongoing project to retell the story of the fabled French brand. The first began with the perfume’s creation and premiered earlier last month.
