West: The Big Island
The Big Island, once considered the ugly duckling of the Hawaiian archipelago, is in the midst of a tourist boom, owing to a crop of new resorts. The most serene of the bunch is Lava Lava Beach Club (lavalavabeachclub.com), which has four contemporary beachfront cottages set on 10 acres of property on Waikoloa Beach, where you can sink your feet into soft sand and warm, turquoise water. When watching sunsets gets old, there’s always lava to be seen at Kilauea volcano and phenomenal stargazing at Mauna Kea Observatories.
