Travel And Leisure Greatest Trips 2009

LUXURY AWAITS:
If despite all of the economic doom and gloom, you’re still looking to spend some cash and splurge on a vacation, Travel And Leisure Greatest Trips 2009 is a must. I’m going to have to settle for looking at the pictures for now….

Speaking of pictures, I love this print by David Downton that I found at fashionillustrationgallery.com. Based in London, England, this site is a one-stop shop for fashionable art finds.

Tamarama – Wonderland City

EASY ON THE EARS (AND EYES):
Are you hooked on The City, starring the Hills’ Whitney Port? If so, then the Australian band Tamarama is probably already on your radar. Their EP Wonderland City is definitely worth a listen. While you’re at it, swing by their image gallery for some eye candy.

Gwyneth Paltrow

GOOP FOR YOU?
I really like Gwyneth Paltrow when she chooses meaty, complex roles but I think her new website—Goop.com—is slightly wacky. Filled with recipes (like Buckwheat and Banana Pancakes!), a few life affirmations a la stuart smalley and a very Anthropology (the store not the subject)-esque gift guide and fashion section, I am a tad bit confused by it. Check it out yourself and come up with your own conclusion.

A FEW FAVOURITES:
The band Mew and their album Frengers isn’t exactly new, but it has been topping my play list for the past week. My favourite tracks are: “She Spider” and “Comforting Sounds.” FYI: They have a new album coming out later this year.

I’m also loving Rachel Ann Lindsay’s gorgeous illustrations, which you may have seen in the windows of Holt Renfrew or in the National Post and Globe and Mail. Check them out at www.rachelannlindsay.com. It will be love at first sight, I promise.

FUN GIRL:
One of the members of the super slick disco outfit known as Hercules and Love Affair has gone solo. Her name is Nomi and her first just-leaked song is called “Fun Girl” and it is fantastic. Look out for her digital EP, “Borough Gypsy.”

Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste

Celine Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste

LETS TALK ABOUT TASTE:
I just finished reading a book called Celine Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste and it has made me see Celine Dion in a different light. Carl Wilson is a fine writer and his opinions are rich to read. I won’t be running home to listen to Celine’s greatest hits anytime soon but after reading this book, I do understand why people really identify her.

LATIN FEVER:
If you haven’t seen Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona yet then I strongly suggest you do. Penelope Cruz is hilarious in it. Her character’s fiery temper is like an erupting volcano!

The Virgin Suicides

The Virgin Suicides

VIDEO SHOUT OUTS:
Looks like two of my favourite directors – Sofia Coppola and Wong Kar-Wai, have been busy making commercials. Coppola teamed up with Dior for the Miss Dior Cherie fragrance campaign. The result is a whimsical and girlie ad that feels like a daydream sequence reminiscent of The Virgin Suicides.

Chungking Express

Chungking Express

Wong Kar-Wai, on the other hand, has teamed up with Ralph Lauren for the Notorious campaign. Shot in black and white, it’s dark, sexy and mysterious. FYI: If you haven’t seen Wong Kar-Wai’s Chungking Express, it’s definitely worth renting.

Let the right one in

Let the right one in

MY VAMPIRE WEEKEND
If I combine 3 of my all time favorite things, what do I get? Morrissey lyrics + vampire movies + anything Swedish = Let the right one in.

This film is a turbulent yet highly romantic coming-of-age story adapted from Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist’s 2004 best selling novel. And, it has already snatched up 18 awards in the international festival/awards circuit. So if you’re still buzzing from Twilight and are looking for something just as bloody and a touch more eerie, this little indie flick will definitely satisfy you thirst.

PHOTO CALL
It may still be a long ways away, but get your calendars out and set a date with yourself and the Art Gallery of Ontario for Oct 3, 2009. The gallery is hosting an Edward Steichen photography exhibit. It’s called “Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years, 1923-1937,” and will feature celebrity and fashion photos from Vogue and Vanity Fair from the 20’s and 30’s.

LITTLE BOOTIE CALL
She’s been around for a while but I am still digging this singer called Little Boots. Her song “Stuck On Repeat” is one of the best dance singles of ’08 but her should-be singles for ‘09 like “Love Kills” and “Meddle” are sublime.

BAG IT UP
I’ve seen my share of Eco shopping bags but this new Winners one, designed by Evan Biddell has got to be one of my favorites. For those of you who don’t know Mr. Biddell, he’s the young talent who won Project Runway Canada last season.

Wendy and Lucy

INDIE GEM
So, we’re post Globes now and the Oscars are just around the corner. One indie gem that has topped a lot of best lists for the year is being released this Friday. Wendy and Lucy has Michelle Williams playing a woman road tripping from Indiana to Alaska with her dog. Yes, it’s another dog movie, but unlike Marley and Me, this flick is a serious star vehicle for Williams. We’ve been fans since Brokeback, but after everything that she has been through, I think everyone is cheering just a little harder for her.

Kate Winslet - The Reader - Revolutionary Road

Kate Winslet – The Reader – Revolutionary Road

IT’S THAT TIME
Now that the holidays and Boxing Day sales are a thing of the past, it’s time to gear up for the awards season blitz. Brad and Angie are going to dominate the red-carpet hoopla, that much is a given. But some hot questions in blog land include: Will Heath Ledger win any honours and if so, who will pick up his trophy? Kate Winslet has been nominated for more Globes and Oscars than I can count on one hand. She’s been nominated for 2 Globes this year for Revolutionary Road and The Reader. So, will this be her lucky year? Will Mickey Rourke score a gold statue for his big comeback in The Wrestler? Snubbed in the best picture category for the Globes, will Milk get an Oscar nod? Will James Franco break all of our hearts and show up with some hottie or will he pull a Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and bring his mom? So many questions, so little time. Hit the theatres, get those Oscar pools going and stay tuned for more awards season coverage on flare.com.
