Mojito

MOJITO MASTER
Besides an appreciation of brevity, the only thing I really have in common with Ernest Hemingway is a favourite cocktail: the mojito. Though I’m pretty sure he didn’t share my love of on-trend drinks. So when Bacardi, the inventor of the mint-infused drink, offered a chance to learn how to mix it perfectly, how could I turn it down?

To start we got acquainted with the rum. Eight tiny cordial glasses were lined up for us as we began the tasting – the first of its kind done in North America. From the original Aguardiente to Bacardi’s Redestilado (the current blend), we sipped through the times to detect how the spirit changed over the years. It’s much tastier today and as our host put it: “Not just a sailor’s drink.” Amen.

On to the cocktails. Mixologist extraordinaire Gavin McMillan walked us through the steps to the perfect original mojito. Try it for yourself:
• 4 lime wedges
• 2 teaspoons refined white sugar
• 8-10 mint leaves
• plenty of ice
• 1 ounce Bacardi original
• club soda
The trick is in the muddler which squishes and mixes the flavours.

To finish off the day, we each met with mixologists to concoct our own personal drink. Mine involved raspberries, pears, lime and 5-spice agavé nectar. I think I’ll call it ‘A Drinkable Feast’. Apparently culinary cocktails are all the rage for 2009.

Get Into It With Krayon Brooks
The best online comedy I have seen in months is on community.atom.com. On the site, actor/comedian Mike Rose brilliantly portrays a character named Krayon Brooks who comments on everything from pop culture to politics in a casual/unconventional/hysterical self-produced web show called “Get Into It.” Krayon is the kind of friend you want at a party because he riffs on Myley Cyrus’ facial dysfunctions, questions Beyonce’s spilt personality and pokes fun at the news in a way that makes him far more appealing to watch than Anderson Cooper. For all of his blogs click onto community.atom.com/profile/KrayonBrooks and look at Mr. Brooks’ favourite links. Get Into It, indeed.

Grin and Grizzly Bear It
My most anticipated album of 2009 is Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest (according to www.grizzly-bear.net, it’s a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Massachusetts). For those who don’t know about the Brooklyn force-to-be reckoned-with musical foursome known as Grizzly Bear, I suggest you check out their EP Friend, their full length disc, Yellow House or their remix album Horn of Plenty. It fuses folk, electronica and rock together in a gorgeous blend of sonic goodiness. Don’t even get me started on Daniel Rossen’s gorgeously-ghostly vocals…

NY Fashion Week Spin
For those who dug Marc Jacobs F/W ’09 show, might I suggest you accessorize his newly created Crayola-bright jackets, capes, and hooded coats with the music that inspired the collection—or at least the DJ who did. I am talking about Larry Levan, the legendary mixer from The Paradise Garage, NYC’s ‘it’ club of the 80s. Bid on the disc Journey Into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story on ebay or buy its mp3s on itunes if you want to know what the meaning of sound and vision really is.

AT LAST:
I saw Cadillac Records yesterday and I have to say, it’s an education on the evolution of the music business. It really uncovers a bit of the shadier side of success for artists such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and the great Etta James (played by the great Beyonce).

MERRI MAN:
If you were smart enough to pick up Mark Ronson’s Version disc last year, you heard Daniel Merriweather’s soulful cover of The Smith’s “Stop Me (If You’ve Heard This One Before).” After ducking into the studio for a full-on album, Merriweather has released his first single, “Change”—which I think is brilliant. The video is really interesting too, check it out on youtube.

SLEEPING BEAUTIES:
Here’s an interesting spin on art. Women between ages 18-40 will be on exhibit in a sleeping women installation by Chinese artist Chun Yu at the New Museum in New York in April as part of the Generational: Younger than Jesus exhibit. The chosen women will reportedly receive $10/hour for popping a sleeping pill and snoozing the day away while onlookers admire them at rest. On a side note, I also found a blog devoted to snapping people caught sleeping on the subway. Who knew sleeping was so buzz worthy?
