It wouldn’t be a music awards show without someone dropping trou, and celebrities were stripping away all sorts of things at last night’s American Music Awards: clothing, special effects, inhibitions. Below, a few noteworthy bare-alls.
Taylor Swift and seatmate Selena Gomez exposed their fan girl tendencies, rapping along without shame to Nicki Minaj’s performance of “Super Bass” and swinging their hips to Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.” Last night was a big one for Swift, who took home all three awards she was nominated for: Country Female Artist, Country Album (“Speak Now”), and the highest honours, Artist of the Year. “This is the craziest thing that has ever happened to me!” the now 10-time AMA winner exclaimed, looking genuinely shocked. We would point out that she won the same award back in 2009, but we’re not going to: despite the fact that she acts stunned every time she snags a prize (a regular occurrence by now), we can’t help but fall for it every time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SikO1LeNySw
Adele, still recovering from throat surgery, was not on hand to pick up her three awards, but Katy Perry took a page from the soul singer’s pared-down approach to performance. Stripping away all her usual bells and whistles, she performed an acoustic version of “The One That Got Away” that earned her a standing O. She sounded so good, in fact, that we were willing to overlook the fact that she chose Judy Jetson as her sartorial muse.
We don’t know if it was because ex-husband Marc Anthony was in the crowd, but Jennifer Lopez gave as fierce a performance as she’s ever given. Stripping down to a nude bodysuit with strategically-placed sparkles (à la Britney Spears in her 2003 “Toxic” video), this year’s Latin Music Artist winner strutted and shook her booty while belting out “Papi” and “On the Floor.” It was hard not to feel bad for LMFAO, who didn’t look nearly as good peeling off their clothes to “Sexy and I Know It” during the show’s finale. -Allison Friedman
