The dramatic comedy Silver Linings Playbook took the top prize at TIFF on Sunday in a not-so-dramatic fashion. Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, the film about a depressed man falling in love with a similarly depressed younger woman officially won the Blackberry People’s Choice Award hours after the festival’s artistic director, Cameron Bailey, spilled the beans via Twitter.
The win could mean more than the $15,000 cash prize for the film as the festival award typically predicts Oscar buzz. Previous winners of the People’s Choice Award include The King’s Speech, Slumdog Millionaire and American Beauty, films that all went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Ben Afflecks’ Iran-based thriller, Argo, was named the runner-up. —Portia Baladad
