1. FIND YOUR PASSION

Discover what you love to do, and do it. Don’t let self-limiting thoughts prevent you from living the life you want to lead. Even if you—and the economy—are in a rut, you have the right to make a positive change right now.

2. STAY MOTIVATED

Seek out a career coach or mentor in the field you want to break into, and make sure you have a brilliant cheering section (your partner, friends and family) to keep you going.

3. IDENTIFY OBSTACLES

Have a contingency plan that includes a financial safety net (think 6–8 months rent, plus a few martini-free weekends) to manage any barriers.

4. RELOCATE

Have you always seen yourself as a New York City mover and shaker or a chic Parisienne? If your dream industry isn’t booming in your current city, consider moving to a locale with more opportunity or a healthier economy.

5. EDUCATE YOURSELF

Your dream job may require further education, so embrace the opportunity. Become a member of a professional association; read industry blogs, websites and literature; and join social media groups such as Linkedin.com.

6. FOCUS ON TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

Have your friends always told you have a flair for styling or photography? Make a personal inventory of your technical or personal skills that could be channeled into another industry, and then explore what skills you will need to obtain or improve for the career you want.

7. FIND A COMPLIMENTARY ROLE

Find a steppingstone job that combines your current experience with the career you want. If your dream is to create your own clothing line, become a personal shopper at a retail store or take on an apprenticeship with a stylist.
