Surprises, surprises! The best dressed of the day are in, and there were a few unexpected arrivals on the red carpet

Though The Great Gatsby has already landed in theatres, that didn’t stop the stars from attending the film’s red carpet event to open the Cannes Film Festival. While we were expecting juror Nicole Kidman to make great style choices (and she did, with a neon-accented floral cocktail dress by Christian Dior Haute Couture), we had no idea  Solange Knowles and model Cara Delevingne would be joining the festival circuit. Here are our favourite looks of the night, from frothy layered silks to sultry black lace:

Who: Solange Knowles

What: A sand-toned sheer dress and bodysuit from Stéphane Rolland Couture Fall 2012

What We Love: The hue of the dress complements her skin tone, while the bodysuit beneath cascading silk accentuates her enviable body. The dress dips down in the back and fabric flutters out behind Knowles like a cape.

Who: Cara Delevingne

What: Black lace Burberry with mega glitter by Chopard

What We Love: Delevingne went for full-on glamour: lace, jewels, blood-red nails and a full face of makeup. Strong eyes and lips at the same time is no longer a no-no!

Who: Nicole Kidman

What: A full-skirted Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring 2013 cocktail gown with neon pink Jimmy Choo pumps (Kidman is the new face of the brand)

What We Love: The refreshing colours and delicate embroidery. But how could she go wrong with red carpet king Raf Simons?

Who: Carey Mulligan

What: A petal pink A-line Christian Dior, the signature look of Gwyneth Paltrow, who wore similar dresses to the Oscars in 1999 (Ralph Lauren) and the Venice Film Festival in 2011 (Prada) and Tiffany & Co. jewellery

What We Love: After several years with a short crop and weeks of updos, Mulligan has finally revealed that she’s leaving her Gatsby-era mini bob behind.
