If the sky were to fall at this year’s Oscars, captivated audiences both present at the Dolby Theatre and at home will scarcely notice. Expected viewers will surely need to be brought back down to earth after Adele performs her title song from the James Bond film Skyfall. The show’s producers revealed Wednesday that the English recording talent will take the stage at the 85th Academy Awards to sing her Oscar-nominated theme song.
“It’s an honor to be nominated and terrifyingly wonderful to be singing in front of people who have captured my imagination over and over again,” said Adele. “It’s something I’ve never experienced and probably only ever will once!”
After a brief disappearance from the spotlight due to pregnancy, the performance will see Adele back where she belongs. It will be her first time performing “Skyfall” live, and her first U.S. television performance since last year’s Grammy’s.
“We have enormous respect for Adele’s unique artistry as a songwriter and a singer,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “She is currently one of the most successful recording artists in the world, and we believe that her performance of “Skyfall” will be an exciting Oscar moment.”
A moment that is, not only highly anticipated, but highly apropos, given the heavy Bond presence at this year’s ceremony, which will pay tribute to 50 years of 007 during the telecast.
The Oscars will be Adele’s shinning moment. Regardless of her performance, our money’s on the fact that’d she’d be taking to the stage for “Skyfall” anyway, which is nominated in the best original song category. The eponymous theme, written by Adele and producer Paul Epworth, is the first to ever debut in Billboard’s top 10 chart, and the first to be nominated for an Oscar since 1981 Bond’s “For Your Eyes Only.”
Perhaps the new mum, who welcomed a baby boy in mid-October, will thrill fans once more by revealing the closely guarded secret of her little one’s name. Doubtful indeed, but after the signing sensation stepped out in West Hollywood sporting a gold necklace that spelled out ‘Angelo’, it not crazy to think she might want to share the spotlight with her son.
The Oscars will be handed out on Feb. 24.
