The Olsen twins are all grown up and proving their fashion prowess with their luxury apparel and accessory line The Row (they’re even nominated for a CFDA award this year).  But if you don’t remember, what launched the business mogul duo into style icon status was their love for hiding inside oversized sweatshirts, skirts, and sunglasses, a style that was coined “hobo chic.”
The ladies talked about the origin of the style as part of Style.com’s “Future of Fashion” article series. “That moment for us was us waking up, going to school, and not wanting anyone to take our picture,” Ashley explained, referring to their time at NYU in 2005. “Kind of a piece of protection.” Mary Kate added, “For me, it was so cold, like the wind chill. How could you not put on 20 things when you’re going from Los Angeles to walking through the snow? … I think it was probably that. And laziness.”  MK Olsen: she really is just like us!–Ashley Singh
