5 Minutes With...Meghan Markle From Suits

FLARE sits down with American actress Meghan Markle, whose character on the hit show Suits proves fashion can be flaunted anywhere, even at a law firm.

Meghan Markle’s character Rachel Zane on USA’s hit legal drama Suits is one of basic cable’s best-dressed professional women. Her headstrong paralegal aspires for a Harvard law degree and struts the halls of the Pearson Darby law firm clad in designer pieces befitting her high-powered future. Fans were overjoyed when Rachel finally gave into temptation in last season’s steamy finale and began a secret office romance with Mike Ross (boyish Canadian actor Patrick J. Adams), a successful associate attorney with a photographic memory and a rather loose grasp of the rules. Based in Toronto, where the show is filmed, the 32-year-old Los Angeles native opened up to FLARE about the trials of Mike and Rachel’s relationship in season three of Suits, a romance with Harvey Specter, the evolution of her style and her fashion and beauty must-haves.

FLARE: Now that Mike and Rachel are finally together, what can you tell us about what’s in store for them this season?

Meghan: Mike has everything that Rachel wants, but he hasn’t earned it, so that’s always going to be a thorn in her side. He works at the firm she wants. He has a diploma from Harvard. Add to that the extra layer of them keeping their relationship a secret at the office. There’s some fun stuff coming up, too, like he meets Rachel’s parents. Her mom is now in the mix—that’s always a big step in a relationship!

FLARE: How far in advance do you find out what’s going to happen to your character?

M: There are always conversations about it at the beginning of each season. And Aaron Korsh, our creator, is amazing in being as open as he can about the thoughts that they have regarding where our characters are going, but it’s ever-changing. They sort of let the story drive where it goes, and the response from fans as well. So if people want to see us together, then they should tweet about it.

FLAREI want to see Rachel and Harvey together. What do you think? Could it happen?

M: No one has ever asked me that! Their interaction thus far has been so limited, but, at the same time, I think he’s always seen her as a) a paralegal and b) Mike’s girl. So I think that would be a pretty huge betrayal that I don’t see Harvey doing to Mike. And I don’t know if Rachel would be into that!

FLAREHow has Rachel’s office attire influenced your personal style?

M: Jolie Andreatta, our incredible wardrobe designer, and I work really closely on Rachel’s look. From the beginning, we had a sense that it needs to be classic pieces that reflect that she comes from money, but, at the same time, all of Rachel’s clothes are interchangeable, whereas the other characters, you never see them wear the same thing twice.

I’m a jeans-and-flip-flops kind of girl in real life. I was born and raised in L.A., so the idea of having this really polished, refined look has absolutely influenced how I dress in real life. Now I’ll wear boyfriend jeans that are baggy, but I’ll have on a beautiful pair of Manolo Blahniks. That is a game-changer from my Havaiana flip-flops!

FLAREWho are your favourite designers?

M: In my personal life, I wear a lot of Belstaff. [I also wear] a lot of Burberry. For Rachel, she wears a lot of Gucci and Prada, so when I’m able to borrow things from her closet, those certainly trickle over for nights out. And for shoes, Rachel and I both wear a lot of Louboutins because they’re comfortable as well as sexy. Oh, Prabal Gurung I love: [he makes] young, interesting pieces. And in Rachel’s closet, as well as in mine’s, there’s quite a bit of Nina Ricci.

FLAREYou’ve got really great hair. Are there any products you swear by?

M: I use Kérastase for most of the grooming products. I use their Oleo-Relax and Resistance Fibre Architecte. We also use Moroccanoil on my ends to make them shiny. And I wash with a couple of different products: Pureology is one of the products I love, and I also use the Brazilian Blowout shampoo and conditioner. And I have to mask because my hair gets blown out every single day.

FLAREWhat kind of makeup products do you never leave the house without?

M: My five-minute face is pretty simple. I always use Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat concealer and NARS Orgasm blush. I prep my face with Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer; I don’t put foundation on, I just put that on—it makes your skin look really glow-y. And the eyelash curler from Shu Uemura and Maybelline The Rocket Mascara. That is my go-to, with some ChapStick.
