The experimental opera The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic will make its official North American debut during Luminato, Toronto’s festival of arts and creativity, next summer. Starring Willem Dafoe and the performance artist Marina Abramovic, the reimagining of the artist’s life will only be staged for four performances from June 14 to June 17, 2013.

The opera, as directed by Robert Wilson (Einstein in the Beach), attempts to portray Abramovic’s struggles to detach herself from her childhood growing up in Serbia to find her own artistic viewpoint. It also depicts her subsequent struggle to merge her identity as an artist with a sense of love and feeling of home after finding success.

Abramovic is widely considered a pioneer in the performance art world. Her popular The Artist is Present performance piece at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art in 2010 drove some visitors to tears, including Girls actress/painter Jemima Kirke.

Tickets for the performances officially go on sale on Friday November 30 at noon. Prices range from $55 to $125 and can be purchased online at luminato.com or by phone at 416-368-4849.
