Continuing the trend towards rebooting fairy tales, Kristin Kreuk will be playing the Beauty in the new television drama Beauty and the Beast.
The series is a modern day retelling of the classic story, with a police procedural slant. The adaptation will be loosely based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name, which starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman.
The Canadian actress, best known for playing Lana Lang in Smallville, will play Catherine, a modern day New York homicide detective who discovers an unlikely ally in Vincent, a military vet turned into a beast by an experiment gone wrong. Forced underground by his appearance, the Beast acts as an avenging angel. For example, he kills the man who murdered Catherine’s mother nine years before.

Much like this year’s Snow White wars, this adaptation will have to face a rival remake. Emma Watson has signed on for Guillermo del Toro’s film version, due in 2013.

We only hope they don’t modernize the story too much—you can never go wrong with dancing teapots and singing candlesticks.–Erin Fitzsimmons
