Less than a minute into our interview, Kaitlyn Bristowe already has me LOLing. The newly-appointed Tresemmé Beauty-Full Volume spokesperson—who is even more bubbly IRL, or at least, over the phone—was on the hook to talk hair, but she was also totally game to dish on all things Bachelor Nation, including her advice for rookie Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher. Read on for our full convo.
Ok, first things first: the secret behind Tresemmé Beauty-Full Volume is that you condition first and shampoo after. What did you notice the first time you tried this?
Reverse washing was a huge game changer for me, because if anyone knows me, they know I am obsessed with getting volume in my hair. When you think about it, when you condition your hair it totally weighs it down. [In the past] I was not using enough conditioner. Now, if you do that first you’re still conditioning your hair and when you shampoo, it washes away the weight from the conditioner. So this is actually genius.
What’s your stance on hair extensions, yay or nay? It seems like everyone has them.
I’m so nay on that one! Because I did them for so long and they destroyed my hair. I got bald spots where the extensions were. If you asked me a year ago I would’ve been all for them but now, no. Shawn was actually the one who talked me out of them, because he was like ‘I just want to run my hands through your hair and not feel extensions.’
Are there any celebs you look to for hair inspo?
Julianne Hough, I love her hair. She’s actually the reason why I chopped mine off.
On The Bachelor, it seems like everyone’s hair falls victim to humidity on the tropical trips—any advice you’d give JoJo regarding this?
Well I didn’t go anywhere tropical on my season but on Chris’ season—if you recall, which I hope you don’t—I couldn’t even watch the episode where we go to Bali because my hair was just stuck to my head. So I clearly didn’t know what the heck I was doing.
What would you do now to beat the heat?
Dry shampoo and ponytails, maybe some headbands.
How often did you actually style your own hair when you were on The Bachelorette?
Never. I had someone do my hair and makeup everyday. It’s too awesome, but then you come out of it and you go back to real life and you’re like ‘ummm, excuse me but why am I not drinking champagne while getting my hair and makeup done right now?’ On the other hand, as a contestant on The Bachelor, I had to do my own hair and makeup everyday.
Who is your Bachelor Nation hair idol?
They all have great hair. I actually got a lot of negative feedback about my hair on The Bachelor because I like to just wash it and go. Everyone’s hair was always so polished and I was like ‘meh whatever.’ But Emily Maynard’s hair was always perfect, let’s go with her.
And what guys on your season had the best hair?
Shawn by far! Remember cupcake guy, Chris [Strandburg]? He had great hair too.
So who spends more time on daily styling, you or Shawn?
He hates when people ask this question because I always try to throw him under the bus and say it’s him but really it’s me. I mean, he definitely takes his time with his hair, it’s cute and funny. But I take more time.
Would you ever not date a guy because you didn’t like his hair?
It’s happened. That’s so shallow of me! But at the same time, when I look at Shawn I’m like, Gosh he is so attractive, and a lot of it is just how good his hair is. His personality is great too!
From watching JoJo on the last season of The Bachelor, what type of guy do you think would be a perfect match for her on The Bachelorette?
I actually got to meet up with her twice this season. I feel like she needs someone who can keep up with her, and who can appreciate her bubbly energy and who doesn’t try to steal her thunder.
What’s your Bachelorette/Bachelor watching routine—do you watch at home? With wine? With Shawn?
Before I was on the show I used to watch it with anyone, as long as there was red wine involved I was down. But I haven’t really watched it since my season.
Being an experienced Bachelorette, what’s the number one tip you would you give to JoJo on how to find love on the show?
She’s got a big personality and she’s quirky, so I think that she should really let that show. And make sure that the guy who’s falling in love with her loves her for exactly who she is.
