While most of us spent the holiday daze chilling in our onesies and binge-watching season two of You, Justin Bieber was busy trying to ignite change in the world—or at least in how we drink our Tim Hortons coffee.
On Saturday, the 25-year-old Canadian singer took to Instagram to poll his followers on the coffee chain’s old cup lids—you know, the ones with the plastic flap that you would fold up to create a drink opening. He asked, “Who’s Canadian and misses these lids at Tim Hortons like I do,” showing a picture of a Timmys cup and the old lid in all its glory.

@timhortons I know they could leak but it was easier to drink out of.. the coffe would come out better.. these new lids are uncomfortable on the mouth, and you get very little liquid each drink it's a damn outrage and needs to be changed back. Tbh it shouldn't be plastic find a way to be recyclable let's change the world 1 lid at a time
Side note: We cannot confirm whether that’s Bieber’s hand, which his wife, Hailey Bieber, seems to really enjoy—at least according to their recent *flirty* Instagram exchange.
ANYway, back to the important stuff here: the poll results. Turns out a whopping 70% responded “Yes,” which inspired the “Sorry” singer to share the results on his Insta feed and address the situation directly with Tim Hortons.
“@timhortons I know they could leak but it was easier to drink out of… the coffe [sic] would come out better… these new lids are uncomfortable on the mouth, and you get very little liquid each drink,” he captioned the post. “It’s a damn outrage and needs to be changed back.”
Oh, and if you thought Justin was only concerned about his ability to drink out of the cup, you thought wrong. He also has the environment in mind and finished his post by adding “Tbh it shouldn’t be plastic find a way to be recyclable let’s change the world 1 lid at a time.”
Oh, the Biebs! One with nature!
Unfortunately, Bieber got his facts wrong, as the new lids are made from recyclable plastic (polypropylene, to be exact). The lids, which began rolling out in the summer of 2018 as a result of customer complaints about the old lid, reportedly took two years to develop and feature a raised dome with a closable spout, a double drip-catching skirt and an embossed maple leaf—not just for Canadiana but also to provide room for the drinker’s nose.

Tims wasn’t offended by Justin’s mistake, however, and since Justin Bieber is, well, Justin Bieber, the company was quick to respond to his Instagram post, thanking him for the feedback and offering him a job on the team that designs the lids.
“Hey @justinbieber thanks for your feedback. Sorry you aren’t loving our new lids, but the good news is that they’re made with 100% recyclable plastic,” the chain commented on Bieber’s post. “We’d love to have you join our team that’s working to make them even better! DM us.”
The Biebs was seemingly satisfied with this response and quickly posted a screenshot of it to his Instagram feed with the caption “We’re making a change one lid at a time. Thanks @timhortons.”
And in case you’re worried about how the great Canadian export will drink his Tim Hortons coffee in the meantime, there’s no need to fret. While attending a Maple Leafs-New York Rangers hockey game in Toronto with Hails on Saturday evening, he was gifted with a huge sleeve of old Tims lids, which he, of course, documented on his Instagram stories.
Oh, and he has already put his new old lids to good use.
Now our only question is will JBiebs get a limited-edition collectible Tim Hortons cup à la Shawn Mendes? He certainly seems deserving of it! Let’s just hope it has a lid he approves of.
