Flare Asks…Haydain Neale of Jacksoul

Flare: Who is your favourite designer?
Haydain Neale: “I’m not fashion conscious day to day. I’ve always feared that too much focus on my look would somehow weaken the music. On stage, I stick to smart, clean suits that hang well… Theory, Hugo Boss, the dapper Alexander McQueen stuff.”

F: What’s your biggest fashion pet peeve?
H.N.: “Camel toe. On either sex, it’s the only true abomination.”

F: What does the word “Style” mean to you?
H.N.: “Style is what makes you feel like a million bucks. How you present yourself should be fun and comfortable and give off the right message about how you feel. Style is the perfect compliment to how you feel inside I guess.”

F: What is in your CD player right now?
H.N.: “Madonna Confessions On A Dance Floor, Prince 3121 and Portishead Dummy.”

F: What do you think is the one CD/album everyone should own?
H.N.: “James Brown, Live At The Apollo.”

F: What’s the one item you cannot leave home without?
“Mac Powerbook. My whole world is in that thing.”

F: What was the last book you read?
H.N.: “Irshad Manji’s The Trouble With Islam.”

F: What was the last movie you saw?
H.N.: “Spike Lee’s Inside Man.

F: Would you describe yourself as high or low maintenance?
H.N.: “Low maintenance. When you love what you do for a living, you tend not to sweat the small stuff.”

F: How do you stay in shape?
H.N.: “Makin’ love, down by the fire, when possible.”

F: What is your favourite travel destination?
H.N.: “My house. My wife’s there and my daughter is there. It’s my ultimate getaway spot.”

F: Where have you not been that you would love to go?
H.N.: “Spain. I’m a fan of the architecture, the art and the music. I’ve yet to experience it in real time.”

F: When you have spare time, how do you like to spend it?
H.N.: “Listening to my daughter tell me how she’s going to change the world when she’s ultimately running it.”

F: Do you have any pets?
H.N.: “Simon, a jack russell/pug cross.”

F: Who do you most admire?
H.N.: “Michaëlle Jean: Great human being, great woman [and] great Canadian.”

F: How would you like to be remembered?
H.N.: “I just want to use music to bring people together, get them to talk about things they might otherwise avoid, like love, tolerance, the causes of hatred. If I can achieve that goal a little every day, then I’ll have no regrets when my time comes.”
