HAUTE COUTUNES Weekly music reviews by Laura Lanktree
The Weepies Hideaway
Have you ever listened to a CD for the first time, and all the songs sound familiar? For me, that’s usually a sign of good songwriting. And that’s exactly what happened the first time I had a listen to Hideaway, the latest from The Weepies.
Sure, The Weepies get a lot of soundtrack play, plus “All Good Things” did first appear on Mandy Moore’s latest album Hope since she co-wrote the track with Deb Talan and Steve Tannen, who are The Weepies, but the sweet boy-meets-girl vocal harmonies feel weathered beyond that. Like these are the tracks you grew up to. And there’s something very soothing about that familiarity.
“Can’t Go Back Now” makes me feel like a 7-year-old dancing to my mom’s Simon & Garfunkel record. Any song that can bring me back to that far off place gets my endorsement.
