Harry Styles appears on our new cover. Head to RollingStone.com to read the story in full. In the feature, the One Direction member opens up to Cameron Crowe about his new sound, his social media presence, Taylor Swift and more. “Every decision I’ve made since 16 was made in a democracy,” he says. “I felt it was about time to make a decision—and I shouldn’t rely on others.” Photograph by Theo Wenner (@theo123456)
Harry Styles is officially a solo artist! After dropping his first single sans 1D earlier this month (we’re completely obsessed, btw) our former #MCM is now on the cover of Rolling Stone’s latest issue—marking it his first big-time interview since going solo. Read on for the highlight reel and check out the full (and v. detailed) interview here.
1. He’s supes nervous about the album’s release (May 13, you guysss!!)
“Of course I’m nervous…I mean, I’ve never done this before. I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing,” Styles says.
2. It *probably* sounds different from what you’re expecting
Say goodbye to the days of Harry Styles serenading you with pop songs, because—according to interviewer Cameron Crowe—the songs on the new album “range from full-on rock, to intricate psychedelic pop, to the outright confessional.” The album’s producer, Jess Bhaskar, adds that Harry demonstrates a different side of himself on the release. “You put it on and people are like, This is Harry Styles?” he says.
3. The majority of the album is about the same girl (but it’s def not Taylor Swift)
Crowe tries to get Styles to talk about his ancient love affair with T. Swift (“Out of the Woods ” 4-EVA) and while he does actually give him the time of day and a few decent quotes about her, like this gem—“Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it’s the best shit ever”—he mentions that the majority of his new songs are about a more recent relationship. But of course won’t say who, UGH. His only hint: “She’s a huge part of the album. Sometimes you want to tip the hat, and sometimes you just want to give them the whole cap…and hope they know it’s just for them.” Maybe he’s talking about Kendall Jenner!?
4. He’s all about the honesty
“I didn’t want to write ‘stories,'” Styles says. “I wanted to write my stories, things that happened to me. The number-one thing was I wanted to be honest. I hadn’t done that before.”
5. He’s still got all the love for his former 1D mates (even Zayn)
When Crowe brings up some of the things former 1D member/band ditcher Zayn Malik has said in interviews—like how 1D’s music isn’t “cool shit” and that he wouldn’t listen to it if he were on a date with a girl (not cool, Zayn)—the now solo artist had nothing but good things to say about his former band mate: “I think it’s a shame he felt that way, but I never wish anything but luck to anyone doing what they love…I’m glad he’s doing what he likes, and good luck to him.” He also adds that that he loves the band and would never rule out anything in the future. WAIT. Does this mean there’s *actually* hope for a 1D reconciliation? Can’t take it back now, Harry!
