Gaga’s on the right track, baby. The pop star’s Born This Way sold 1.11 million albums in its first week of release. Lady Gaga now joins an elite club of artists who have sold more than one million records in a week, including Taylor Swift and 50 Cent.
Born This Way‘s sales are the highest first week sales since 50’s album The Massacre sold 1.14 million copies in March 2005. Gaga’s Little Monsters will have to throw down way more cash, however, if she ever wants to beat ‘NSYNC‘s record. In 2002 the boy band’s album No Strings Attached sold 2.42 million records in its debut week. However, based on her impressive sales, Gaga is well on her way to being the top-selling artist of 2011.
Born This Way is just the 17th album to reach one million copies in a week since Nielsen SoundScan began in 1991. Her album sales were definitely helped by Amazon.com (controversially) selling her album for just 99 cents. It’s estimated the online retailer sold nearly 450,000 copies at that extremely discounted price. –Regan Reid
