MGMT continue to surprise us

Perhaps the most anticipated release of 2010 is MGMT’s sophomore album, Congratulations, and though the official drop date is April 13th – like most albums these days – the tracks have leaked online. The slip doesn’t seem to bother the musical duo, though. Instead, they’ve posted the tracks for streaming on their site, with a note: “We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us”. (Something tells me their music label is the “anyone” in question.)

Having heard the tracks a while back, I’ll break it down like this and then leave the option to stream up to you:

1. Critics will love it, while fans of their first release likely won’t.

2. Whether you like it or not, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have yet again managed to create a sound that is completely new. Sure, at times it makes me think of the Beach Boys, at others Pink Floyd, but at the end of the day it’s 2010 and these guys have tapped into something new. That’s not easy.

Speaking of new, head to the site now and catch the just released music video for the first single “Flash Delirium”. I’m a bit speechless on that one.  —L.L.

UPDATE: Sony just sent me the video to embed for your viewing pleasure!
