Who: Emily Haines Why: The Metric front-woman has style, substance and a killer new solo album. Flare caught up with Emily after she performed three back-to-back sets (so let’s add stamina to the list of things we love about her) at the CD release party for her debut album, “Knives Don’t Have Your Back”.
Flare : What an incredible performance. How are you holding up? Emily Haines: It’s really been non-stop. I wasn’t sure what would be humanly possible but it was fine. The performances actually got better as the night went on, if you can believe it.
F : Your look is very low key – jeans and a t-shirt – but those sparkly brown platforms are gorgeous. Where did you get them? EH : Oh I love those. I got them in LA. They are my absolute favourite. I’m sort-of into a whole-wheat glam look right now: a little bit of glam, but with a nourishing vibe. They’re woven natural fibre, but there’s some metallic thread in there.
F: What was on the t-shirt? EH : Jane Wells Schooley. I didn’t know who that was when I bought it, but it turns out she was a well-known feminist. I wore that t-shirt in the “Dr. Blind” video.
F: Who is your favourite designer right now? EH : Claire Edmondson. She’s a Toronto designer who makes stage clothing for me.
F: What does the word ‘style’ mean to you? EH : Being able to express yourself through your clothing, my love of a good flax muffin. Independence.
