We know what we’re watching this weekend: the new Selena Gomez-produced series 13 Reasons Why has finally arrived on Netflix. Gomez posted this heartfelt message on Instagram last night to express her “pride and joy” about the passion project.
Our show @13reasonswhy came out tonight and I couldn’t be more overwhelmed with pride and joy. After 7 years of holding onto this book, I couldn’t of picked a better time for this message to exist. Jay Asher wrote a beautifully tragic, compelling story and we were lucky to have brought it to life. Thank you to every single soul that put their heart into this passion project
The series is based on the best-selling mystery books by Jay Asher, which are known for being open and honest windows into modern teen life. It begins with lead character Clay Jensen finding a cryptic cassette tape recorded by Hannah Baker (his school crush who committed suicide two weeks earlier). Clay then begins to discover the 13 reasons why she decided to end her own life.
Gomez has been very open about her involvement with the show, calling it her “passion project” on Instagram. The FLARE cover star has also been candid about her own struggles with mental health, saying she was once “very broken inside” during her 2016 AMAs speech. But after some much needed time out of the spotlight, Sel is back with the newest binge-worthy Netflix show all about the harsh realities of high school and mental health.
