Didn’t RiRi just drop “BBHMM?” Not that we’re complaining. The video for her new single “American Oxygen” premiered today and if this is what we can expect from R8, then we’re into it. Every track so far has been wildly different: “Four Five Seconds” was soft and folky, “BBHMM” saw her spitting bragadocious ladyboss lyrics like Shit, your wife in the backseat of my brand new foreign car/Don’t act like you forgot, I call the shots, shots, shots, and “American Oxygen” is a straight-up message song. Rihanna sings This is the new America/We are the new America while a succession of powerful images of ’60s civil rights marches, Ferguson protests, 9/11, Mexico border riots, Martin Luther King’s funeral and more flash by. She tweeted: “One of the most important music videos I have made to date.”
And gone are the slicked-back hair and shiny lids of “Four Five Seconds” or the bangs and ’90s power pony of “BBHMM.” This time, she’s pulling off grey (or lilac?) tinged hair, long red nails and a matte red lip.
Watch the video below and tell us, what do you think of “American Oxygen?”
