“You throw like a girl” is officially a major-league compliment, thanks to Global’s new series Pitch, which tells the (fictional) story of the first woman to play in Major League Baseball—and as a pitcher, no less. Kylie Bunbury stars as Ginny Baker, the young girl with a killer curve ball and a crazy-driven coach-slash-dad that is gonna hit you in all your #girlpower feels. We got the lowdown from the Twisted and Under the Dome actress about Ginny’s athlete skillz, the pressure on women to succeed despite being told we can’t and her own baseball background—or lack thereof.

How much pressure do you think Ginny feels being the first female MLB player?
It’s an enormous amount of pressure, to be the first woman to do anything. But Ginny has the mentality of an athlete. She works really hard, and has a lot of heart, and a lot of drive, so she can push the nervousness and the pressure of that responsibility to the side.

Have you ever been told you couldn’t do something because you’re a girl?
Yes. Most definitely. Throughout my entire life I’ve been told—I think all women have been told—that we can’t do things. Which only makes us want to do them more.

Can you see Ginny being a role model for young girls?
One hundred percent. That’s the hope, to inspire young women, to let them know that they can do anything. [We’re telling them] to dream big, and to never give up on your dreams, to work really hard on whatever you wish to attain, because you can do it. No one can tell you you can’t. It’s a really empowering, inspiring story and message, and it’s one that needs to be told right now. It’s the woman’s time.

So do you feel pressure, as the person who’s portraying that role model?
I feel so much pressure. But it’s good, though! I feel pressure because I care so much about it. It’s really important to me that the message is delivered, and that I’m representing this story well. And I get nervous, because I want to make sure that I’m saying the right things.

Did you ever play baseball?
I never played baseball before this! I had to learn.

Do you have a favourite baseball team?
I’ve been watching the [San Diego] Padres a lot, obviously, because Ginny Baker plays for the Padres, but I am from Minnesota, so the Twins as well!
