Interns' Picks: DJs, Decanter Jewellery, Matte Lips and GIFs

What are the interns of FLARE lusting over this week? DJ's, re-purpose decanters, matte lip balms and even vintage GIF blogs.

Here at FLARE, we have a lot in common: a love of fashion, beauty, magazines, culture and general wordsmithery. But as we rush through each day, we don’t often find time to share the minutiae of our passions. What do we binge-watch on a rainy weekend? What are we longing for; what movies make us cry? So, in spirit of our Editors’ Picks column, we thought it was time the interns had some say. Introducing a new weekly column, Interns’ Picks, where you can get to know the people assisting the FLARE team—and maybe we can get to know one another a little better, too.

Raves aren’t normally my scene, but despite my aversion to strobe lights, I decided to check out Montreal-based DJ Kaytranada at the Hoxton in Toronto last weekend. He delivered a groovy, laid-back set that exceeded my expectations and turned my not-so-positive view of electro concerts around. Far from thumping repetition, Kaytranada’s beats combined melodic elements of hip-hop, house and trap music in a catchy soundscape that had the crowd dancing all night, and itching for more. His funky, dance-y Janet Jackson remix will surely add some zest to your Friday night!

Drinks on me! Attend all of your glitzy holiday parties donning your favorite libation around your neck and not in your hand. Toronto-based jewelry designer, Lauren Passander has transformed vintage decanter labels into the trendy accessory I cannot get enough of. These collar necklaces are one part nostalgic and one part glam, with a splash of boldness (bonus: no one will be guessing what to order you at the bar!). I never feel guilty about overindulging in all things vintage and her jewelry line, six. is the perfect vice: featuring heirloom-worthy pieces from reworked antique jewelry, including pocket watch parts from the 1800s. I know how I will be spiking up my holiday season, so jump on the wagon and support a local artist!

A bold lip is part of my everyday look, and Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balms have become one of my new favourite go-to products. They’re super creamy yet lightweight and are available in a wide array of shades from demure, for those less adventurous, to dramatic. Not to mention their light peppermint scent gives them just that little something extra. The shades I’m loving right now are Showy and Standout.

Oh, the hours I have lost to the endless scrolling of my Tumblr dashboard. My daily journey into the depths of blogs often inspires, but many a time I find myself staring at the screen until minutes have blurred into hours. This week, my Tumblr addiction has been honed in on Raiders of the Lost Tumblr, or Randar.com: Tom Simpson’s creative space where he can, “really go nuts with all kinds of different things.” His GIFs page is a treasure trove of vintage films and cartoons. The one moving repeatedly below of Rita Hayworth is from the opening scene of Cover Girl.
