French film actor and model muse Gaspard Ulliel boasts an uncanny resemblance to Yves Saint Laurent in a new promotional poster for Saint Laurent. The release follows on the heels of teaser images published from Yves Saint Laurent, another French film producing a biopic on the late and great designer.
Rumours of a rivalry between the two production companies are swirling. At the heart of the Bertrand Bonello-directed Saint Laurent will be the launch of the iconic designer’s namesake fashion house, setting the dial firmly through the sixties and seventies, when Saint Laurent was on the brink of rapturous press. Meanwhile, Jalil Lespert’s Yves Saint Laurent will examine closely at the widespread career of Saint Laurent and his relationship with lifelong business partner Pierre Bergé, featuring a youthful cast led by Pierre Niney.
Niney makes a believable debut as a young Saint Laurent, but Vogue cover model Ulliel nails it. Ulliel, who is the veteran face of Chanel’s men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel, also currently stars in Longchamp campaigns alongside Kate Moss.
While award-winning costume designer Anais Romand has enlisted to oversee the wardrobe for Saint Laurent, which has sanctioned her permission to reproduce YSL pieces, Bergé is fully endorsing Yves Saint Laurent. His blessing will grant Lespert access to original dresses, sketches and designs. The better portrayal of the clothes that set the fashion agenda for a generation won’t be determined for a while. Both productions begin shooting this spring.
