Scotiabank 2013 Photo Award Announcement
Thousands of photos are taken, tagged, titled and posted every day. Photography has become a public forum, but as Stan Douglas, the Vancouver-based artist and winner of the third annual Scotiabank Photography Award eloquently stated in his acceptance speech, something is lost when the medium is so instant. Douglas joins past winners Lynne Cohen and the late Arnaud Maggs as winners of the country's largest annual peer-nominated prize.
Douglas’ work reexamines particular locations or past events using photography, film, storytelling, public spectacle, and soon, mobile apps. His films, photographs, and installations often take their points of departure in local settings, from which broader issues can be identified. Next, see examples of work by Douglas and finalists Andrea Grauerholz and Robert Walker, plus images from the awards gala held at Ryerson's Image Centre in Toronto.
