FLARE Fantasy Hockey: Team Savvy vs. Team Shallow

Four editors, two fantasy teams: which will win the first round of the playoffs? One was chosen based on talent, the other based on… a different kind of talent. It’s fantasy hockey, FLARE-style

It’s no secret that there are more than a few hockey fans in our officewe even deemed hockey season the other fall season in our October issue. So we’re pretty stoked about the Stanley Cup playoffs, whether or not we watch every game. (Plus, five Canadian teams are in!) Hence, we decided to venture into the obsessive world of fantasy hockey. FLARE editors are squaring off with two very different fantasy first-round playoff teams: our resident hockey experts chose their players based entirely on skill set, while our hockey-illiterates went with the guys whose physical attributes gave them the extra edge. Meet the teams below and follow along on Twitter @FLAREfashion to see who emerges victorious!

Team Savvy: Caitlin Kenny, associate beauty editor, and Jillian Vieira, assistant fashion editor
With this season’s MVP-to-be (goalie Carey Price) and top Calder trophy contender (rookie Mark Stone), our 10 ultra-athletes leave it all on the ice—and our fantasy scorecard.

Team Shallow: Cameron Williamson, editor-in-chief, and Michelle Higgins, digital editor
We were extremely strategic when it came to choosing our fantasy team. Evaluating each contender, we asked some very important questions: Does his name sound cool? How are his teeth? Are there any Google images of him holding a kitten? After careful consideration, we filled each of the key positions: the beefcake (Brandon Prust), the movie star (Henrik Lundqvist), the supermodel (Roman Josi), the indie band frontman (David Rundblad), the hot ginge (Casey Cizikas). We also picked a guy we vaguely thought we might have heard is good at hockey (Jonathan Ericsson, but we might be thinking of Erik Karlsson. Oh well! We dig his Keanu vibe).
