Fierce-O-Meter: This Week's Most Fearless Females on TV

Flat screen, flat screen on the wall, who was the fiercest of them all? We rank the week in television on a scale of 1 to 5 Beyoncés

For years, our small screens were awash in angsty male antiheros. Dark and tortured Don Draper types who wouldn’t know fierce if it kicked them in the cojones. Lately though, the TV tide seems to be shifting with a surplus of super fly females from surgeons to sorority queen bees. To mark the moment in Grrrrrrl Power, we’re rounding up the most butt-kicking women on the boob tube each week.

This new STARZ series about the cutthroat world of professional ballet in New York City is Centre Stage melodrama meets Breaking Bad gravitas—and yes, that’s a very good combo. Claire is a steel town runaway with a mysterious past, but don’t let the wide eyes fool you. In the pilot we see her seducing a wealthy benefactor, stealing drugs from the prima ballerina and snapping off an infected toenail like it was NBD. Overall, the intense girl drama makes Black Swan look like a buddy cop comedy. Bring it!

Anyone who thought this fiercely protective matriarch wasn’t going to pull a gun on the dudes who kidnapped and assaulted her youngest son obviously hasn’t been paying attention. To quote Lucious: Security in the hip-hop world requires a housedog and a junkyard dog. Good thing Cookie is both.

This week the OPA gang went up against a beloved cultural icon who had secretly been drugging and raping women over course of his esteemed career. (Sound familiar??!!) Leave it to Team Shonda to create yet another pointed, political script that rages against contemporary injustice. And leave it to Olivia Pope to make sure that a sex offender (even one who has the reputation of being “God’s gift to women,” and who just received a Presidential Medal of Honour from her boyfriend) gets his just desserts. And we don’t mean a Jello Pudding Pop.
Fierce factor: 4.5/5 Beyoncés

Honorable mentions go to Alicia Florrick (The Good Wife), who this week revealed herself to be a master of DIY margaritas.  And to Miss Piggy (The Muppets). Because when your ex asks you to go out and buy a birthday present for his new girlfriend, what else is there to do but buy her a music box that plays your old song?
