For years, our small screens were awash in angsty male antiheros. Dark and tortured Don Draper types who wouldn’t know fierce if it kicked them in the cojones. Lately though, the TV tide seems to be shifting with a surplus of super fly females from surgeons to sorority queen bees. To mark the moment in Grrrrrrl Power, FLARE introduces our weekly Fierce-O-Meter, rounding up the most butt-kicking women on the boob tube each week.
Chanel Oberlin, Scream Queens
Yes, she is catty and occasionally cruel and the kind of girl that has turned bullying into a master class, but we haven’t been so entertained by pledge class mean-girling since Parker Posey told her freshman to “fry like bacon” in Dazed & Confused (a movie that came out before Emma Roberts turned two, by the way). Watch it now on City.
Fierce factor: 2/5 Beyoncés
Dr. Miranda Bailey, Grey’s Anatomy
The battle for chief heated up this week with the arrival of Dr. Tracey McConnell, a “shiny,” blond superwoman, played by Joey Lauren Adams (are we detecting a Dazed & Confused theme here?). To prove that she is still the best woman for the job, Bailey gives her presentation to the board while performing an open cholecystectomy, telling them, “This job belongs to me…and every single one of you already knows it.” Bam!
Fierce factor: 3/5 Beyoncés
Cookie Lyon, Empire
As far as making an entrance goes, it doesn’t get much more OMG than the gorilla costume that Cookie wore to host a #FreeLucius rally in Central Park. The fact that she was wearing feathery Gucci underneath the ape suit—all the fiercer. Watch it now on City.
