Here at FLARE, we have a lot in common: a love of fashion, beauty, magazines, culture and general wordsmithery. But as we rush around putting together the magazine and this website, we don’t always have time to share the minutiae of our passions. What do we binge-watch on a rainy weekend? What album is on iPod repeat? What movies make us cry? Hence, Editors’ Picks was born. A weekly column where you can get to know the people who bring you FLARE—and maybe we can get to know one another a little better, too.
This week, we’re sharing a little something for your eyes and ears: two albums, one documentary and one popcorn blockbuster to check out this weekend.Lindsay Murrell, Photo Editor
I recently discovered (and it feels like a real discovery) the documentary Beauty is Embarrassing when a friend of mine brought it over for a movie night. And I’ve been thinking about it long afterwards. It features American artist Wayne White—the man is SUCH a talent: cartoonist, puppeteer, sculptor, painter, comic, banjo strummer. His life approach is just incredible. Must watch!Matthew Biehl, Editorial Coordinator
I’ve had Little Boots’ new album Nocturnes stuck on repeat since its release earlier this month. She took an extended break between albums and began DJ-ing, which introduced prominent trance and dance elements to her sound compared to the 80’s-esque experimental pop of her first album, Hands. The record’s opening track, “Motorway,” is my favourite of the bunch – the smooth synths, strings and moody atmosphere make you feel like you’re escaping with the singer on her late night road trip.

I’m currently loving Vampire Weekend’s new album Modern Vampires of the City. Upbeat and colourful, it’s a great addition to your summer playlist. My essential tracks: “Ya Hey” and “Step.”

I admit it: I have had a crush on Vin Diesel since 2002 when I watched XXX at a sleepover. Though my friends think it is completely incongruous with my personality, I love big, sweaty muscles…and fast cars. I used to daydream of buying a motorcycle with pink flames on the side. Though that dream never materialized, the Fast & Furious movies appeal to my latent street racer, so I’m pretty pumped for Fast 6. I already have my tickets for an Imax screening this weekend.
