Here at FLARE, we have a lot in common: a love of fashion, beauty, magazines, culture and general wordsmithery. But as we rush around putting together the magazine and this website, we don’t always have time to share the minutiae of our passions. What do we binge-watch on a rainy weekend? What album is on iPod repeat? What movies make us cry? Hence, Editors’ Picks was born. A weekly column where you can get to know the people who bring you FLARE—and maybe we can get to know one another a little better, too.

I have had a limited edition version of the Westmount Tote since spring, which Roots gifted a number of editors, and I can’t stop wearing it! I normally prefer to rotate between a selection of designer handbags, roomy totes and mini clutches for work, but I keep coming back to this one bag. Made in Canada with Italian leather, the Westmount is conveniently roomy: big enough for my MacBook Air and wide enough at the base to fit my packed lunch. The leather has held up well to daily wear and tear, and I like the structured and relatively compact shape of the tote. It’s casual enough for visits to the Junction Flea and polished enough to wear to the office, which is no small feat. Bravo to stylish, Canadian design that works!

When the world you know begins to crumble around you, do you cling to the past or forge ahead and confront the coming changes head on? Allegiant, by Veronica Roth, follows main character Tris as she tackles this choice (and many more) in the conclusion of the best-selling Divergent trilogy. Hot on the heels of Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, Roth has created a very different, but equally imaginative, dystopian society where each person is divided into one of five factions modelled after a particular virtue. The strong, affecting characters and cinematic writing sucked me in with the first book and kept me coming back for more. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out this gripping series (you can binge-read all three this weekend!) before the upcoming film adaptation starring Shailene Woodley hits theatres next Spring.

With FLARE‘s digital gift guide now in the works, every waking hour (that I have available) has been spent scouring the web for ideas. Admittedly, my oniomania has consumed me. Such a plenitude of options are out there—some old, plenty new, and all desirable—and we have been narrowing down our choices, while uncovering new surprises along the way. My latest obsession, discovered during these early days of gift guide mayhem, is the Jabra Solemate: a portable Bluetooth boom-box that boasts a lug sole and wicked sound. Available in a variety of colours, my favourite being the fire engine red pictured below, this is the perfect find for anyone on your list, and I just couldn’t wait until gift guide launches to talk about it. Thank me later!
