Beyoncé’s hit summer tour, The Mrs Carter Show, landed at the Air Canada Center last night, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. There were pyrotechnics, cross-arena flights, beautifully shot (if slightly long) video interludes, great dance sequences, and all the elements of a spectacular show.
I had been to a Beyoncé concert once before, at Madison Square Garden years ago, and The Mrs Carter Show was just as entertaining and even more fashionable. I didn’t see the sequined costume with nipple details designed by The Blonds that caused controversy when the tour debuted in Belgrade, Serbia, but the looks she did wear in Toronto were fabulous and designed to show off her legs. There were many leotards, thigh-high boots, side and back peplums, and a plethora of sequins and crystals, all designed for elaborate choreography and maximum visibility.
Whether she was belting out “1+1” in a blue sequined bodysuit (while sitting on a piano!) or showing off her dance moves in a gold fringe animal print mini-dress, Queen B captivated the crowd with her powerful vocals and trademark wind-machine-swept tresses. The two-hour long show featured the classic Destiny’s Child hit “Survivor” alongside her own power ballads like “Flaws And All,” and even a cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” which segued naturally into “Halo” to close out the evening.
The Mrs Carter Show arrives in Montreal July 22 and in Vancouver on November 30.
