Costume designer Paco Delgado revealed to Footwear News that all of Anne Hathaway’s shoes for Les Misérables were all custom made to suit her vegan lifestyle.

“She’s vegan, so we couldn’t use any animal materials on the shoes for her character Fantine,” said Delgado. “We had to find very specific shoemakers to create lace-up boots and ankle boots.”

The behind-the-scenes news shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who have been closely watching Hathaway’s recent red carpet looks: the actress donned a vegan version of Tom Ford’s spring 2013 gladiator dominatrix boots for the musical’s New York premiere.

She reportedly took the vegan dive after her role as Selena Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) in The Dark Knight Rises, crediting her commitment to a spout of illness caused by a pizza-binge.

“You can’t go hog-wild as a vegan,” said the actress.

It’s nice to know that you don’t have to sacrifice style to become cruelty-free.
