Judging by the screams at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre Tuesday night, Drake didn’t need to ask “What’s my name?” The Canadian rapper made a surprise appearance onstage with Rihanna on their smash collaboration. Looking perfectly at home (which, technically, he was), the 24-year-old rapped his hits “Over” and “I’m On One,” then introduced his “partner in crime” (not to mention ex fling) Rihanna for “What’s My Name?”. After his verse (and some sexually charged dancing with Rihanna), he vanished as quickly as he appeared.
Rihanna carried on with the show like Drake had been a figment of our Canadian imaginations. She didn’t so much as thank Drake, a.k.a. Drizzy, a.k.a. Wheelchair Jimmy, for dropping by, although she did explain in a rare moment of spontaneity she “gets shy” in front of crowds. Next to Drake’s drop-in, Rihanna’s revelation was the second biggest surprise of the evening, considering we’d already witnessed strip-teasing dancers ripping off her tuxedo to make way for some Madonna-worthy writhing on “S&M.”
The well-worn familiarity of hits like “Shut Up And Drive” and “Hate That I Love You” off 2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad was apparent in the singer’s voice, but she more than made up for it with the enthusiasm behind her new material, notably current singles “Man Down” and “California King Bed.” Rihanna has nine other Canadian dates this month, including Montreal, Saskatoon and Vancouver.
