ICONIC IMAGE
In honour of our 30th anniversary, FLARE recently launched an exhibit at Toronto’s prestigious Spoke Club during the Toronto International Film Festival called FLARE CELEBRITY , gathering 30 portraits of the most famous names ever published in our magazine’s history. To commemorate the occasion, we have created a gallery of the exhibit’s 10 most fascinating images snapped by our roster of inspiring photographers.

Elisha Cuthbert
ELISHA CUTHBERT – FLARE, SEPTEMBER 2006
Photographed by: Max Abadian Behind the lens: Universally known as Canada’s sexy girl next door, Cuthbert is also one of our country’s hottest acting exports. Here, we mixed her steamy red-carpet style with a twist of vintage Hollywood glamour.

Keira Knightley
KEIRA KNIGHTLEY – FLARE, SEPTEMBER 2007
Photographed by: Max Abadian Behind the lens: Always a chameleon on camera, Knightley knows how to make any scene work to her advantage. Shot in The Savoy Hotel in London, the then-22-year-old Golden Globe–winning actor offers a moment of intense emotion—which is her specialty onscreen.

Gwen Stefani
GWEN STEFANI – FLARE, JUNE 2005
Photographed by: Max Abadian Behind the lens: This was photographed in Monte Carlo the year that Stefani quit her day job as lead singer for No Doubt to sign up for a new career as a solo singer as well as a designer for L.A.M.B., aka the then–little clothing label that could. Her newfound confidence comes off remarkably clear in this photo, since during our shoot, three of her solo hits were climbing the charts.

Eve Salvail
EVE SALVAIL – FLARE, DECEMBER 1999
Photographed by: Max Abadian Behind the lens: Unlike many others before her, Quebec-born model Salvail always walked on a runway of her own—sporting cropped hair, dragon tattoos and underground club wear on and off duty. Which is probably why she became one of Jean Paul Gaultier’s darlings in the 1990s. This close-up photo captures her independent nature and otherworldly spirit.

Kate Moss Naomi Campbell
KATE MOSS & NAOMI CAMPBELL – FLARE, OCTOBER 1997
Photographed by: Deborah Fulsang Behind the lens: Before street-style blogs conquered the fashion world, FLARE began to regularly feature models who strutted off the catwalk—women who inadvertently created World Wide Web–mania. Here, Moss and Campbell are snapped off duty and off guard on the streets of Paris, overdressed in the epitome of ’90s chic.

Dita Von Teese
DITA VON TEESE – FLARE, NOVEMBER 2006
Photographed by: Max Abadian Behind the lens: Nobody studies the golden age of glamour as seriously as Dita Von Teese. When it comes to taking a picture—such as this one, which was snapped on an estate in the Hollywood Hills—Dita has the ability make her surroundings look as though they’ve time traveled with her into 1950s.

Isabella Rossellini
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI – FLARE, NOVEMBER 2000
Photographed by: Michael Williams Behind the lens: Rossellini is the definition of ageless style and beauty and this photograph completely supports this theory. Taken when Isabella was 48 years old (looking 30-something), she resembles her mother, Ingrid Bergman.

Destiny’s Child
DESTINY’S CHILD – FLARE, OCTOBER 2001
Photographed by: Paul Alexander Behind the lens: Taken in the matter of minutes at the MuchMusic HQ on Toronto’s Queen Street West, Alexander made history by snapping the fastest and chicest shot of the group that has ever been published.

Brad Pitt George Clooney
BRAD PITT & GEORGE CLOONEY – FLARE, DECEMBER 2007
Photographed by: George Pimentel Behind the lens: As one of the country’s top sharp shooters, George Pimentel’s red carpet moments are more artful than artifice. This extraordinary moment, taken at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival (during the Ocean’s 13 premiere) captures the public pomp and circumstance of the celebrity world as well as the strong friendships that endure behind the scenes.

Heidi Klum
HEIDI KLUM – FLARE, JULY 1998
Photographed by: Michael Williams Behind the lens: Before she was saying “auf wiedersehen” to eliminated contestants on Project Runway, Klum was a top model who worked with FLARE on a number of issues. Here, Williams brings out the power and the beauty behind the German-American icon in a single snap.
