According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 49%—yes, almost half—of people who have felt symptoms of depression and anxiety never seek medical help. In any given year, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem and by age 40, about 50% of the population will have or have had a mental illness.
So why aren’t we talking about this more? The taboo around speaking openly about mental illness still exists, although campaigns like Bell Let’s Talk and Opening Minds (established by the Mental Heath Commissions of Canada) are working to eradicate it.

In October 2016, musician Kid Cudi (nee Scott Mescudi) shared a deeply personal note on his Facebook page letting his fans know that he was checking into rehab for a lifelong struggle with depression.
“It’s been difficult for me to find the words to what I’m about to share with you because I feel ashamed. Ashamed to be a leader and hero to so many while admitting I’ve been living a lie,” he began. “Yesterday I checked myself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges. I am not at peace.” Cudi’s production and managerial team took over the launch of his album at the end of 2016 while he was still in treatment.
