Scientology may be the unofficial official religion of Hollywood, with Tom Cruise’s association with the Church at the center of his messy divorce from Katie Holmes and Leah Remini’s infamous departure in 2013. And Cruise and Remini are definitely not the only celebs to follow the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard. From The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss to our favourite Riverdale villain Hermione Lodge, we’ve rounded up the celebs belonging to (or are rumoured to belong to) the Church of Scientology—and trust, some of these patrons may surprise you.
The Orange is The New Black star converted to Scientology as a result of her relationship with Malcolm in the Middle’s Christopher Masterson, brother of fellow churchgoer Danny Masterson. Prepon opened up about her longitime involvement with Scientology to Celebrity magazine. When she first joined the Church, Prepon says, “It was amazing, and I felt that finally something was speaking my language.” Since her initial involvement, she says she’s become more herself. “The auditing has stripped away all of this charge, false ideas, decisions and mis-emotions that were affecting me.”
The actress even credits Scientology with helping her manage her role as Alex on Orange is the New Black. She says the religion helped her be “willing to go there and be free and vulnerable and really jump into scenes wholeheartedly.”
