We love love—even better if we’re talking about the rich, famous people type of love. These new celeb couples have been some of the few bright spots in the tire fire that has been 2018 thus far. From Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s whirlwind engagement and (predictable) breakup to Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp getting caught smooching, this year has basically been like a series of quirky rom-coms—and we have loved every minute. (Of course, like any rom-com, some of these couplings weren’t meant to last the year—or even the month—but we’ll #neverforget.)
2018 has so far been the year of surprises, surprise couples, that is. From Elon Musk and Grimes making their MET Gala debut to finding out Ariana Grande has a thing for funny men, the new year isn’t holding back. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the newest pairings (and some old ones). As the saying goes, ’New Year, New Boo?”
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson
If you had your fingers crossed for a Pete and Ariana wedding in the near future, we have some bad news for you. The Sweetener crooner and Saturday Night Live funnyman have called off their whirlwind engagement. Although we saw this one coming, it doesn’t make it any less sad. The pair, who first met when Grande hosted SNL in 2016, started seeing each other in May 2018, after breaking up with their respective long-term partners. Davidson and Grande dated, fell *madly* in love, bought property, committed to spending their lives together (with some seriously expensive bling) and disclosed NSFW info about Davidson’s penis size—all in around a month’s time, becoming everyone’s favourite PDA couple who just. would. not. stop.
The timing of their breakup makes sense for Grande, the singer has had a difficult few months. In September 2018, her ex-boyfriend of two years, Mac Miller, died after an accidental overdose at his home. Grande posted a tribute to Miller on her Instagram page, writing: “i adored you from the day i met you when i was nineteen and i always will. i can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. i really can’t wrap my head around it. we talked about this. so many times. i’m so mad, i’m so sad i don’t know what to do. you were my dearest friend. for so long. above anything else.” The singer cancelled several appearances in the weeks following Miller’s death for “emotional reasons”—including a spot as the musical guest on the premiere of SNL‘s 44th season.
Thankfully Davidson and Grande have their (entirely permanent, life-lasting) tattoos to remind them of their (not so) ever-lasting love. Our biggest concern? Who’s going to get custody of Piggy Smallz?!
