In the wake of the surprising success of Fifty Shades of Grey, publishers Simon and Schuster have just inked a deal to bring yet another Twilight-fanfic-turned-novel to your local bookstores.
Based on the 2009 Twilight fan fiction titled The Office (not the NBC television show), Beautiful Bastard and its sequel Beautiful Stranger will be released in February and May 2013 respectively. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series follows an ambitious intern who finds herself in a love/hate relationship with her boss.
In her original re-imaging of Twilight’s pivot relationship between vampire Edward Cullen and human Bella Swan, The Office fanfic author, Christina Hobbs, used porn as important plot points in her workplace fantasy. This would inspire other writers to do the same, paving way for other smutty fan-made tales, including Fifty Shades of Grey.
Hobbs removed the original story from the Internet later in 2009 because she felt overwhelmed by its instant success. But in 2010, she teamed up with another writer, Lauren Billings, to rework the story for publishing. Like Fifty Shades of Grey, this reworking included character name changes to remove the blatant Twilight affiliation.
Both Hobbs and Billings will be credited under the collective pen name, “Christina Lauren.”
Meanwhile, the Twilight franchise, the original inspiration for the two series, will soon meet its end. The last movie installment, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, will be released on November 16.
