Holiday cheer is in the air, which means another important time of year is about to begin: awards season. The American Film Institute got the ball rolling on Sunday by announcing its annual list of the year’s top movies and TV shows, providing a potential blueprint for how the Oscar and Golden Globe chips might fall. In the movie category, Terrence Malick’s Palme D’Or-winning The Tree of Life rubs elbows with David Fincher’s stylish new The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation, Martin Scorcese’s kid-friendly Hugo, and the delightfully disgusting romp that is Bridesmaids. The TV category showcases an equally eclectic mix: HBO fantasy epic “Game of Thrones,” sitcom favourite “Modern Family,” and law drama “The Good Wife” all received nods. And even though the AFI’s mandate is to honour American films, it made special mention of The Artist, a French romance inspired by classic American silent films, and the recently-completed Harry Potter franchise. Now would be an excellent time to get those big award bets going. -Allison Friedman
