First fashion job?
Diane Von Furstenberg, New York City
What made you want to become a designer?
Nothing can make you a designer. I think I design because it’s the only thing I know how to do…
What inspires you?
Everything. I’m am magpie…I collect everything. Love markets, libraries, old magazines. I also have some very stylish women in my life. They keep me on my toes and inspire as well.
Who have you dressed?
Kirsten Dunst most recently…Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton…Keira Knightly wore a white dress of mine to the Toronto film festival.
How would you define Canadian style?
What was it like growing up in Canada?
I loved growing up in Montreal. Its one of my favourite cities—I spent many a cold night in the basement watching Fashion Television. Where I grew up was so far removed from a fashion scene that maybe isolation helped the creativity. I come home a lot. My favourite place to go when I am back in Montreal is Pistol, on St. Laurent. My friends own it—good cocktails and sandwiches.
What turns you on, creatively, spiritually…?
Generally caffeine and a blank page.
If you could meet anyone, who would that be?
What is your favorite era and why?
Now…everything is so exciting….
What was the last fashion item you bought and why?
A bow tie, to wear at Versailles for Dior Couture. I danced till dawn.
What profession would you want to attempt besides your own?
Architecture or hand modeling.
What don’t you like about the fashion industry as it is?
I like everything, the good, the bad, the ugly…
Where would you like your career to be in 15 years?
Above all, I want to be in bigger studio and also open my own store in London, Paris and New York, and of course be a happy 44-year-old. Maybe get a dog.
Is there anyone in particular that you would love to wear your pieces?
Probably you, I am sure you look beautiful in Erdem.
